Biography / CVNick Lloyd's Personal BiographyI spent a year in Rome on a Rome Scholarship in Sculpture, where I gained a regard for histories and traditions as revealed by the archaeologist celebrating a notion of non-verbal communication which remains pertinent in these rather arid conceptual times. I worked for many years in the North East of England until taking up the appointment of Subject Leader in Sculpture at the University of Wolverhampton in 1992. I have made several sculptures to commission, notably for Centro and the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation. My attendance at the Beijing International Sculpture Symposium (2002) led me to speculate that there is a great deal of possibility for new dialogues and new kinds of practice to emerge which might be more artist-led. I relinquished my work at the University of Wolverhampton in January of 2006. I intend to extend and develop my practice through the PhD I have registered at the University of Kingston; I have established a new studio in mid wales and am seeking out ways of incorporating a new (to me) rural environment into my practice. I continue to draw, to make proposals for commissioned work, and to create new works for exhibition.
Artist StatementNick Lloyd's Personal StatementMost of my work has been concerned with the experience of landscape and the notion of a sense of place. This notion is inevitably locked into the North European landscape tradition but is mediated by practice and other formal concerns (from post modernism, the supposed crisis in sculpture practice, the work of the archaeologist, issues around public art etc.) I like the notion of public art and am intrigued by how it might be possible to make complicated objects which work on different levels, fulfilling a design brief, being contemporary rather than nostalgic or sentimental, and being meaningful with reference to the history or use of a place.
